Stranger Than Fiction

This series is a growing collection of pieces I've made that explore the many stories nature tells

- the real, the fictional, the spiritual, and the unknown.

This little triptych explores Florida's forests  – combining their lore, their mysteries, and their bizarrely real residents.

One mystery I included is the myth of the black panther.  Since I was a kid, I’ve heard stories of sightings

(everybody has one), and even though science has convinced me they’re not real, a small part of me wants to believe that one day the forests will reveal our stories were true.  The truths about nature are fascinating, but the unknown is what keeps inspiring me.  What new pollinator will we discover?  Will the ivory-billed woodpecker surprise us like the coelacanth and emerge from extinction?  And when will you have your own unexplainable sighting of a black panther?

The Alligator Goddess Oracle

The alligator is a symbol of fierce compassion and creation.  She is a mother to her children (holding one delicately in her powerful jaws), as well as the mother of the Everglades, birthing these ecosystems from her burrows.  She rules the realms of land and water, logic and emotion, and will protect anyone or thing she loves.  When the alligator goddess presents herself to you, you are encouraged to embrace your own power and protect those who need it.

These tiny 2x3in portraits are a window into the mysterious world of flowers.  In my journey as a naturalist, I've become fascinated with the discoveries I make the closer (and smaller) a look at nature.  Flowers can hold an entire ecosystem on one bloom, with bees buzzing, spiders hunting, and inchworms camouflaging.

In the world of Elementals, fairies are known to care for and manipulate flowers.  Is this world just fictional, or will you discover a fairy if you look close enough at the flowers?

This poster was created from a series I drew for the 2018 Inktober challenge.  I made 31 small pen drawings of sea creatures (1 every day of October), and as the days progressed, the animals lived deeper, ranging from 10m to 13,000m.
